T-boned collision, impact on passenger side rear wheel up to cab. Impact so powerful it spun the rear of the truck into the air and rotated the truck 180 degrees. This broke the rear tire, all the leaf-springs, brackets holding same and bolts holding rear end onto vehicle, knocked all running boards off vehicle and broke the drive shaft. The impact also shoved the bed out of line with the cab by more tan two inches.
Mel Grata LIED to us, telling us the repairs were delayed for a week because the insurance adjuster had not yet visitied their shop. Mel Grata's is an preffered repair shop with this insurer and for a fact adjusters are NOT required for such shops. Further, GRATA misordered parts costing an extra week in the repairs.
In spite of all this damage, and the customer's direct questions, Grata declined to measure the frame to deterimine if it was bent before beginning repairs. Grata declined to examine the parts which bore the load of the impact; refusing to examine the internals of the rear-end.
After nearly six weeks, they finally called to say the truck was ready. Driving not more than 100meters from the shop, the owner and myself heard grinding noises from the rear-end. I, a non-mechanic, simply said "bearings"? Having taken it to another mechanic, I was told it may be bearings. Takign it back to Grata, the mechanic rode the vehicle with me and immediately said "it is the bearings". Yet the same mechanic would not admit to having tested the vehicle himself after the repair saying only that 'they drove it'. I have to wonder who the deaf person was they hired to test drive their repairs; anyone with modestly good hearing could hear that noise.
Subsequently, they replaced ONLY the wheel bearings and seals. THEY NEVER EXAMININED THE AXLE NOR THE BEARINGS ON THE OTHER END OF THE AXLE NOR THE INTERNALS OF THE REAR END. All of these parts bore the impact that shattered parts further down the line.
As the vehicle owner and one who pays their insurance on time every month, after a collision I like to KNOW that the vehicle is SAFE. I have no assurances that this vehicle is safe as no one has inspected the impacted parts. I am reasonably certain that I would have a hard time PROVING anything in the rear that fails in the near future was CAUSED by the accident unless we get the parts examined NOW rather than months of wear from now.
Grata agreed to do the second repair (bearings only) and issued a LOANER vehicle for the duration. Later in the day, they sent a FAX declaring that we had 30 minutes to return the loaner vehicle or they would report it stolen to the police. THAT IS A FINE WAY TO TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS. Um, make that FORMER CUSTOMERS. We strongly advise that you DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE KNUCKLE-DRAGGING NEANDERTHALS.
For all I know, the axle could be cracked and come off the vehicle on the highway! I will NOT accept that this repair is complete until it is CERTIFIED that the frame is straight, and the parts in the impacted area are in good condition. Having NOT looked, they cannot make such a certification.
One can trace a line from the broken parts to the point of impact, every physically intervening part took the force of the impact and carried it on to the parts that broke further down the line. All these parts were stressed in the impact and all should be examined for damage and certified worthy or replaced.
Having been sorely abused by the service department of Mel Grata Chevrolet Toyota ad nausium, and by their rental department, again, we urge that no sensible person would consider doing business with this company.
